Notes field improved newline display Link to this post

    Hi Christoph,

On further testing I've discovered what seems to be a small bug in KeePassMobile 0.8 running on the Nokia E63, as follows:

If I have, in KeePass (non-mobile), Notes in an entry that displays like this:

This is text line number 1.
This is text line number 2.
This is text line number 3.
This is text line number 4.

and I use that same database with KeePassMobile, then when I VIEW the Notes field in the entry I see

This is text line number 1.
This is text line number 2.
This is text line number 3.
This is text line number 4.

BUT when I then SELECT that Notes field for edit and the Nokia text edit screen we have been discussing opens to allow me access to the text, I suddenly see something like this (the screen is 34 characters wide):

This is text line number 1.This is
text line number 2.This is text li
ne number 3.This is text line nu
    mber 4.

This is messy and hard to read and edit. All formatting is gone. If I exit the edit, then the text displays perfectly again.

And if, in the text edit screen, I manually use the newline key
    |
    <----
to add newlines, then, when I exit editing mode, the text now appears double-spaced:

This is text line number 1.

This is text line number 2.

This is text line number 3.

This is text line number 4.

I hope this one is easy to fix. It will help a lot in editing Notes fields if it displays consistently and correctly.

    Thanks again.
    ETT

    Hello ETT

this seems to be something OS specific (or even phone specific?). The notes of a database created with KeePassX under Linux showed up fine. I will test it with KeePassPC/Windows later.

Re: Notes field improved newline display Link to this post

    Hi Christoph,

Hmmmm ... my records also originate from KeePassX and display and edit fine there and also in KeePass - no difference.

It is only the full-screen edit mode that is a problem on the phone using KeePassMobile. And it really is a mess.

I note in passing that there is an option in KeePass to choose either newline=lf or newline=cr,lf and I have tried changing this option but I cannot see any difference. I can't find documentation on what it is supposed to do.

I don't know what else to try right now. I'll think more about it. I wonder if there is some way of finding out whether the lines terminate in lf or cr,lf ; anyway, that may not be the problem.

    Regards,
    ETT

Re: Notes field improved newline display Link to this post

    Hi Christoph,

    More information ...

There is no need to look at any other platforms; the corruption is happening right on the phone.

    1. On the phone, I create a new entry.

    2. I edit the Notes field, which is empty, in full-screen mode on the phone.
    I write:
This is text line number 1.
This is text line number 2.
This is text line number 3.
This is text line number 4.

    3. I then exit the full-screen edit, so I am looking at the blue display of Notes. I see, in blue,
This is text line number 1.
This is text line number 2.
This is text line number 3.
This is text line number 4.

    All OK so far.

    4. I then re-enter the full-screen edit mode on the same record, and the data is already corrupted - I see

This is text line number 1.This is
text line number 2.This is text li
ne number 3.This is text line nu
    mber 4.

    5. I manually add newlines using the "return" key on the phone. I now see, in the edit screen,

This is text line number 1.
This is text line number 2.
This is text line number 3.
This is text line number 4.

    6. I exit back to the blue screen. This time I see (!)

This is text line number 1.

This is text line number 2.

This is text line number 3.

This is text line number 4.

    It is now double-spaced.

    7. I go back into the Notes full-screen edit and I see again

This is text line number 1.This is
text line number 2.This is text li
ne number 3.This is text line nu
    mber 4.

Note that there are now *multiple* newlines in the text, but in full-screen edit they are invisible. There is no visible character position between the "." and the "T" of "This", but there are definitely multiple newlines in there.

    How strange.

I hope this helps. I'm sorry I did not provide the definitive evidence the first time !

    Regards,
    ETT

    Hello ETT

thanks for further investigation. Yes, this seems something phone specific. It works without problems on my phone (BlackBerry). Can you test it on any other phone? I will try it with my old Nokia (S40 Device).

    Regards
    Christoph

    Hi Christoph,

This will be disappointing if it proves to be the phone.

Unfortunately I do not have access to any smartphones I can experiment with other than the Nokia E63. I hope that other users may read this and perform the experiment and report on their experience.

And I'll do some more research.

    Thank you,
    ETT
