Hi Acex,

I don't want to speak for the developer; I'm just a user of KeePass (PortableApps USB version), KeePassMobile on the handset, and KeePassX on Linux.

"it is a bit heavy" - I do find this on my Nokia E63, but it is doing quite a bit of work and other applications are also slow on my handset. The elapsed time to start up and close is heavily dependent on the number of records. I have well over 1,000 and a database size on the handset of over 0.5 MB. KeePassMobile takes about a minute to read that and decrypt it.

That is slow, but it works, it's useful, and there is nothing else like it, especially considering the database compatibility with KeePassMobile from the PortableApps.com suite. I can use KeePass on the USB key on any Windows PC, and KeePassX on any Linux PC, and do most of my updating there, and copy the same database to the handset and use it there. I find this fantastically useful. If there is any other product that does this, I'd like to know.

If you look at the KeePass website http://keepass.info/download.html you will see that the original KeePass developer makes it clear that KeePass 2.x is not a "later" version of KeePass 1.x - it is a different, parallel version that does different things and is more demanding of the environment in which it will run.
In particular:
"KeePass 1.x Prerequisites: None.
"KeePass 2.x Prerequisites: Microsoft .NET Framework ≥ 2.0 (preinstalled on Windows ≥ Vista) or Mono ≥ 2.6."

To me and many others, the simplicity and the lack of prerequisites make the KeePass 1.x compatibility the winner. I can just walk up to any Windows machine with KeePass 1.x or many Linux machines with KeePassX and it will work, and this is what I have to do. And I can use the same database on the handset with KeePassMobile.

I can't see the KeePass 2.x being able to do this anytime soon.

it works but :

it is a bit heavy, i think it is because of the implemented eye candies,

and when will you implement KDB 2.x support ? cause i think many of the users have migrated to the newest version.

I've got a similar problem, i. e. I also get the OutOfMemory exception. In my case it appears when I try to save the data base.

I create a DB, enter a master password, try to save it, bang.

I also tried the beta version but the effect is the same.

I'm using a Nokia 6260 slide which is running on an S40 (yeah I know, that OS is pretty old, but the phone isn't). I did not find any configuration options I could use to change the available memory for applications, but I just might have overlooked something; hints are welcome

I'd be very interested in a version of keepassmobile which is less memory hungry, so maybe you could make the version you wrote about available on a larger scale?

I have install and used it successfully on my T746. Here is my parameters:

I installed it through data cable with TkFileExplorer (this might be the key as it give the application full privilege if you install it this way)

then I have my file save onto my SD card (if you were trying to save on your phone memory try this first, since you should have full access to the SD card

And everything works well for me.

yes, it is possible to load KeePass V1.x databases with KeePassMobile. Can you please have a look and tell me how large your database (in KB) is? My guess is, that your database is too large for your mobile.

Hi!
I have just installed KeePassMobile on my SonyEricsson S500i. Is it possible to load Keepass database file which I am already using on PC with Keepass v1.7?
As I tried to load that database file in KeePassMobile, but after entering master password, a loading bar is displayed, after few seconds the app crashes (closes automatically).

(Also no Log entry is found for the error in LOG file)

it is hard for me to figure out, why your back button is not working like it should, without having the phone. But please try to use KeePassMobile V0.9 BETA (see 'News'). I included some minor improvements regarding the back button in it. Does the problem still persist with V0.9?

On my Samsung M3510 the right button, where Back, Cancel actions are mapped, doesn't work. I press, but nothing happens. Usually this can be circumvented using a menu item in the menu opened by the left button. But there's not always such an item (for example after saving a database, or on the help screen).

Show password while typing

Recently I became concerned about master password length (mine is quite short). I'm considering to use a pass-phrase (http://www.itstactical.com/2010/03/30/password-strategy-and-keepass-password-management) but I'm worried about password complexity while having to type it on my mobile with just a 0-9 keyboard: characters are replaced by * right after typing and right now I really have to pay attention in order to type it correctly... what will it happen when I will move to a 40-50 chars passphrase?

So I'm suggesting to give the user an option to show the password while typing. But it should not be remembered as a persistent preference for security reason: maybe sometimes you feel not safe or people are staring at your phone while you are using it

BTW... I'm a long time satisfied user and you are doing a great job for free: Thank You very much.

May I also suggest to give an option to use a smaller font in quickview mode?

Also I need to scroll the quickview mode menu to see all options but there is plenty of space in my mobile (N82) above that menu so it seems the menu area could be a little higher... or maybe you need keep it this way to save space for smaller screen mobiles: forget this request in this case.

I downloaded KeePassMobile to my computer and unzipped it there and then transferred the unzipped files to my phone through the media transfer option. Then I installed the program from the phone with no problem at all.

Hi all,

a few days ago, KeePassMobile workd perfectly on my Sony Ericsson W995. But after adding a few entries, the database could not be read anymore by KeePassMobile.

KeePassX 0.4.2 on MacOS X and
KeePass 1.17 on Windows do not have any problems reading this file.

But on my phone i always get the Error Message
"An internal application error occurred: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException", see here for a screenshot:

Another screenshot there shows the last part of the log file.
Actually, these Screenshots have been created with the SonyEricsson MIDlet starter (kind of J2ME Platform Emulator).
Thus, it seems to be no phone related problem.

Creating a new database file either on the phone or on the Mac/PC works perfectly, on the other hand.

Any Clues?

v0.9 didn't solve the problem unfortunately

Further info for anyone else with the P1i (or other UIQ3 phone):

If you paste the password in, instead of trying to input it via the keyboard then it works OK.

I have the same problem with the password entry on the P1i using v0.8.1 I managed to figure out the one character at a time workaround before seeing this forum entry.

Would be very keen on any fix available.

I love your interface. Much easier to use than the other j2me keepass software I tried. However the other software has no problems with passwod entry so may have to go back to that

Thanks heaps for creating this software. I will donate if the password issue can be fixed.

normally KeePassMobile detects corrupt databases. But if you are sure, that the password is correct, you can use the "Repairing Databases" functionality of KeePass for PC. See instructions here. Hope this helps.

After I have installed KeePass on my PC I try to open the database.
Unfortunaly it doesn't work. The message is Invalid/wrong key. I am really sure it is the right key.

can you please try to open the database with the PC version of KeePass V.1.17. Do you have an older backup of your database? Can you please try to open that one with KeePassMobile and KeePass for PC, too and post the results?

Hi,

for a few months I create a code database. It works a long time. Yesterday I would make a new entry but the database could not be opened.
The meassage in the log-file is:
Could not decrypt database file with specified password - x: Exception during kdb decryption: bad pad block corrupted

I use a Samsung 5230GT and KeePass 0.8

Can me help someone

Yes. Open 'Preferences' (choose corresponding menu entry from main menu) and change UI to "fast" mode. Does this help?

Hi. Nice and very useful program. But I have found that some important features are missing. (sorry for my bad English). First of all it would be great to have a built-in password generator. Second: I find no way to edit name (title) of entry. The last thing: is there any ability to optionally disable GUI animation or make GUI less heavyweight? With a lot of entries (10 psc, for example) in one group animation performs a little bit slow even on my phone. Thank you.

I think this has something to do with access rights, because a file open dialog should appear at this point. Can you figure out how to set the access rights for KeePassMobile on your phone? (Maybe ask in a Samsung forum if it is possible and how to do that.) Are you able to create a new database?

But when I try to open a new database it locks up the phone for a while, then the phone resets itself.

I have been testing Quickview (on Nokia E63) and have a small suggestion which should be a very quick change if you agree.

In the full record view, a record looks like this on the E63:

Details
User name:
123456789012345678901234567890 (30 characters displayed)
Password:
123456789012345678901234567890 (30 characters displayed)
URL:
123456789012345678901234567890 (30 characters displayed)

and in Quickview this record looks like:

User name: 1234567890123456789 (19 characters displayed)
Password: 12345678901234567890 (20 characters displayed)

I'd like to suggest that, since Quickview is an abbreviated display mode anyway, that you shorten the field labels down to a minimum length so that the maximum data length can be displayed.

For example,

U: 123456789012345678901234567 (about 27 characters displayed)
P: 123456789012345678901234567 (about 27 characters displayed)

After deleting (the database) and the folder on the mobile-phone, it's not possible to open an other database with the mobile-phone. KeePassMobile will stop with an error message. So you have to create the old folder again. After that you can open KeePassMobile and chance the location of the database. And now, its possible to delete the old folder.

On this subject, none of your suggestions really work for me.

Unfortunately I have a large number of records imported from elsewhere. I will do what I can, but I still need to see title+username to be able to navigate quickly. That's what the previous Palm application ("Strip") did and it was brilliant for quickly finding the right record, also helped by the faster and denser display on the Palm. (I don't know why Nokia 2010 technology is less good than Palm 1998 technology in terms of useability, but that's another story.)

"2. Use "Quick View" (can be enabled in Preferences). "
I know about Quick View but this actually makes things worse on my handset.

Quick View has a sort of highlighted display of the preview record, and that display is slow and wastes a lot of space - it has a HUGE line spacing, even worse than the usual Nokia app line spacing.

In Quick View, I can only get 4 records on the screen instead of 6.
And, instead of navigating by clicking down,down,down,
it's more like
down - wait a moment,
down - wait a moment,
down - wait a moment,
and every time the screen refreshes,
down - wait a few moments longer

It's slow and frustrating, and it gives me an ever smaller window through which I can see my world as I'm trying to zoom in.

Well, not for me, because again the Quick View takes so much vertical space that all I get is the search page header
Search Text:
[search text box on following line] (a thought - could the label and field be on the same line ??)

then underneath that I only see a list of two records, one Quick View-expanded and the other not. A list of two records to choose from, out of maybe 20 or 50 search results, is just not useable. It takes minutes to scroll down to find the right one.

Also - I don't know if this is just my handset - search is slow to use because I can't just type the search text; I have to highlight the search text field, then use the select button to open it full-screen, then type the search term, then hit the OK - it's slow and laborious. This seems to be a general problem on the Nokia E63 handset applications.

Same problem. And seeing only the records returned by search at the lowest level of the tree, I will have no idea where they belong in the multi-level hierarchy and I will not be able to tell even which client they belong to.

I have tried Search but do not find it useable for these reasons. Possibly on a handset with a deeper and faster display and better forms navigation it might be OK.

I made my suggestions with these problems in mind. I find that the best navigation is to be able to start high and quickly zoom down into the lower level so I know exactly where I am.

2. Use "Quick View" (can be enabled in Preferences).

3. Use search: I do not navigate through my database at all any more. I always use the search. In your case, if you search for "server1" you will get all server1 entries. Combined with "Quick View" you should be able to find a entry very fast. Or you search for "root". In this case you will get a list of all servers with a root account.

Anyway, I will try to figure out, how to reduce the font size (and therefore how to display more entries on the screen).

Hi Christoph,

This suggestion will, I hope, make a big difference and greatly improve the useability and user-friendliness at very little programming cost.

Assume there is a group of records for some servers (say, server1 - server4), and each server has several logins (say root, admin, user1, backup) and I have selected the group and am viewing this series of records in KeePassMobile.

I am likely to see a list like this on the handset (and I can only see a window of 6 records at a time on the Nokia E63):

server3
server1
server4
server2
server2
server3
server2
server2
server4
server4

Two problems are apparent for the user:

1. Without selecting and opening the records, one by one, I cannot directly find the one I am looking for (for example, the record for root login on server2)

2. The records are not in order - or, rather, they are probably in the order in which they were entered into KeePass, which also makes it harder to find the right record.
On the Nokia E63 I can only see 6 records so I see, for example,
server3
server1
server4
server2
server2
server3

so I don't know that there are more records for "server2" until I scroll down to the very end of the list.

Actually the sort order problem is not the worst problem, because I tend to enter records into KeePass or KeePassX desktop version,
and then I transfer them to the handset mainly for viewing, and I can probably manually fix the order in the dekstop software.

To fix problem 1 (and possibly also problem 2) I suggest the following:

When the user has navigated KeePassMobile into a group and is viewing a series of records,
currently you display the record title only.

Instead of that, for each record in the list, make a character string of

record title + delimiter character + user name

and display that instead, left-justified, the first N characters where N is the display width available.

I suggest choosing a delimiter character which take minimum space and which people are unlikely to use in either record title or user name;
I like vertical bar "|" for this. It doesn't have to be pretty; space is very limited and I'd rather see as much data as possible.

so I can quickly find exactly which login record I am seeking without wasting time.

This would represent a very big improvement over the current useability, and I'd be very happy if you could do this.

To make it perfect, if you have time, you could add the step of also sorting the records on this same string as a key.

Then the list would be super-clear:

I am using KeePassMobile a lot, and have introduced a number of colleagues to it. We are all using Nokia E63.
Everyone finds KeePassMobile helpful.

By the way, I notice that KeePassMobile and many other applications only display 6 lines per screen on the Nokia E63, widely-spaced, whereas, with the same dimension of screen, my old Palm Z22 under PalmOS displayed 11 lines deep in a small font with very small lines spacing, yet is was very clear.
Is there any way to increase the display density to display more lines per screen with less vertical space between lines ?

thanks for the feedback. I will try to double check any possible performance improvements for V0.9. One small improvement is already implemented: The loading time is shown with progress bar. Therefore you should not see nothing for 40sec (your point 2). If you want to check this out, write me a mail to contact@keepassmobile.com and I will send you the latest BETA.

Improved display of location within hierarchy

Hi Christoph,

I'd like to suggest some navigation improvements which are small changes and which, I hope, should be easy for you to code and not take a lot of time.

Navigation within KeePassMobile is already quite nice, with ability to easily move up and down in the hierarchy of group/subgroup/subgroup/record.
But I am am often not sure where I am in the hierarchy, and it seem that the heading that you display could be used to help.

1. Currently, once I am logged into KPM, I see my database name displayed at the top of the screen (which is good), like this:

MyPasswordDB.kdb

Firstly, I suggest that, to save space, you could stop displaying the file extension ".kdb" to save space (the reason will become apparent below) and just display in the format

MyPasswordDB

2. Currently, when I have selected a record at the lowest level of the tree and I am seeing its contents, the title line changes to be the name of the record.
So if
I am in database "MyPasswordDB.kdb"
and within that I am in group "Customer1"
and within that I am in subgroup "Server1"
and I have selected the record called "admin"

then KeePassMobile currently displays, as page title, "admin" (without the quotes).

That is also good.

3. But I propose an extention to this which will show the user more navigation information:

I suggest that you choose a delimiter character that does not take much space, maybe "\" or "/",
and that you make a character string that depends on where the current position is and which contains

database name (without the ".kdb")
(if within a group) + delimiter character + current group name
(if within a subgroup) + delimiter character + current subgroup name
... etc ...
(if within a record) + delimiter character + current record name

and then you display the right-hand N characters of that string, where N is the display width (may be a parameter the user can set if it is hard for the program to know).

So the page title would first look like
MyPasswordDB

Then, when I have selected group "Customer1", for example, and I am browing inside that, the title would look like
MyPasswordDB/Customer1

Then, further, when I have selected subgroup "Server1", for example, and I am browing inside that, the title would look like
MyPasswordDB/Customer1/Server1

Then, at some point, when I have have gone deeper in the hierarchy, I would only see the right-hand part of this string because there is no more space, something like
..DB/Customer1/Server1/Subaccount1

I hope this idea is clear. I do often have trouble knowing where I am in a deep (or even a shallow hierarchy) with a lot of records, and something like this would really help.

Data load time

Hi Christoph,

Thank you for continuing to develop KeePassMobile.

As previously discussed, anything you could do to improve the program and data load time would help.

My experience is on Nokia E63, with a .kdb file of about 500 KB.

The time to get started seems to consist of several phases:
1. Time from selecting KPM to seeing menu - about 8 seconds
2. Time (after entering password and authorising program to access data) to load data: about 40 seconds
3. Time to decrypt: about 2 seconds.

The main delay appears to be the time to load the data into memory - the other delays are minor - so that seems to be the one to attack. If you can make any improvement, that would be greatly appreciated.
